Hello, Hello My name is John and I can be found on Skype as Trihnicus Aim as Laal Dorimo and Yahoo as Trihnicus. I've been invited to begin work on a Friday night game.
It's quite likely that I will want to add a "theme" to this game so I would like to hold off on Character Generation Until that is established. I will want everyone to Introduce themselves here and to me in private.
I would like to know several things: How long you have been gaming, what your preferences for gaming are, if anyone has any particularly favored settings The things you liked and hated most about your last DMs and any themes that you have been dying to try out.
An example would be. " Hey I'm John I've been gaming for 4 years and prefer an even balance of combat and roleplaying. I tend to dislike psionics and have a fondness for the Forgotten Realms Setting. I loved individualized rewards that my last DM designed Ex getting a mark of a dragon friend for aiding a dragon and hated it when another insisted that all rolls be done privately which made every action take 5-6 minutes as a bare minimum. I've been interested in a City/Guild campaign focused on gaining control over a particular location.
I -am- new to this so any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
I am serious about disliking psionics and am going to ask that you find something else to play if it all possible. I'm also going to require that any rulebook you wish to tap must be owned by me.... the list is extensive so feel free to ask.

My name is Matthew you can find me on openRPG forums as matt89 as well as myth-weavers under the same name. Yahoo instant messanger as chainsaw_mainiac90 and skype as metal_pan. I've been gaming off and on for about 8 years but the thing is i've had lazy dm's that would let me get away with quite a bit. Now this was NOT on purpose I honestly didn't know any better and had no intentions of cheating but the dms either didn't care about or didn't want to research it. The main problem i had was putting ranks in skills for the longest time it confused me (still kinda does to a point) However, if I make a mistake I do not argue when corrected either by gm or by a fellow player. In short though, im still learning my way around the game. The other problem I had with gm's was their lack of creativity and imagination. Say we are in combat, I give a description, and this is just as an example, "My barbarian grows angry as he dodges the blow, he raises his mighty axe and comes down on the his opponents clavical at an angle!" and this would be followed by "ok, you hit, you killed the thug next one comes and tries to hit you." To me its kinda irritating that I try to be descriptive to get more into the game and the DM who is supposed to be creative can't even make combat exciting. You know what I mean? I mean you don't have to get into gory details if you don't want to but at least give me something...LOL. What I would like to see is our characters get engaged in a massive battle almost Lord of the rings type of battle but im not particularly picky. I'll agree i like an even balance of combat and roleplaying too, (you could do a tad bit more combat if you wanted too though, wont hurt my feelings ) I like psionics but really its not an issue for me not to play it. I myself prefer to play melee characters be it a fighter, barbarian, monk...and... thats about all the ones i had an opportunity to play lol! I never play an evil character or do anything to try to hurt the party but it is not unlike me to play a hilarious barbarian who might find that lever in the dungeon to be irresistible to pull I'm all about team work and even when we aren't in combat I tend to get into the game seeing it almost as a movie.

Hey everyone, I'm Dax and I'm relatively inexperienced with pnp gaming. I haven't done that many campaigns, so I don't have a lot of preferences. I'm mostly familiar with the Forgotten Realms setting, but I would love to try out Planescape and possibly Eberron.
In general, I think a fair mix of roleplay and combat would be best. Personally I hate prolonged battles against hundreds of repetitive monsters. In addition, can you post any in-house rules you might have so we know what to expect ahead of time? And can everyone post what race/class they'll be playing so we can have a rough idea of what the group makeup will be?

No CLs higher than 1. I'll import races/classes/concepts into whatever setting we'll stop in whether it be an FR thing or something Homebrew.
1st level is Max HP Skill point gains from Int are retroactive to help keep skills simple. Any Class Skill you get stays a class skill regardless if you Multi-class.
I believe in situational modifiers. No the halfling covered in feces does not have a 15 DC check to intimidate the Hill Giant squad.
A druid covered in a Fire aura levitating off the ground and shooting lightning bolts at shit thousand facing herself into something with burning eyes or what have you probably has a fairly good modifier to that same skill check.
I'll break certain physics rules that don't make sense.... dropping rubble on someone does X amount of damage... catching them in a cave in which for the most part is just rubble might very well be an instant death.
Reflex saves mention rather specifically that they are only possible when you have somewhere to go..... the rogue does not get to teleport out from under a falling Iron wall because he made his reflex save if he's otherwise trapped or unable to escape with his move speed Yes I will make you justify how you make X save or Z check if it seems unrealistic.
You dodge a fireball you have to move somewhere... standing still and looking at it means you get hit by it.
The manual is rather clear that the rules are incomplete and that for the sake of expedience/continuity and fun that there are times the rules should be ignored and or augmented... I'll leave it mostly as is but if I change something.... it's been changed.

Sounds like decent common sense to me. I'm in the same boat as Dax as far as experience and no entrenched preferences go. I'll likely play a non-evil melee type, leaning between barbarian and paladin at the moment. How do you all feel about having a frenzied berserker in the party?

Open RPG will work fine but I'd like for everyone to pick up Skype... a system I've found that works is OOC conversation goes on in skype and OpenRPG is reserved for in-character only.

A Frenzied berzerker would be fine but know beforehand I'm going to look at the concept strictly.... Frenzied berzerker is throwing a loose cannon into the party and it may get you into a lot of trouble.
that aside they can be a lot of fun... it's one of my favorite prestige classes.

As for a Theme... we are going to be based around a Homebrew City. You are all Orphans from the Same Orphanage who have gone to the city for roughly the same purpose. We'll be spending the first session fleshing that concept out and deciding what you want your purpose is to be.
You will have some sort of backing IE you belong to a guild or you have a rich mentor or you are all guardsmen.
No evil.
going to start us off at first level but I'll probably fastforward the first few levels because they can honestly be very boring.
The last thing to note is that I'm going to want everyone to come up with a sort of character theme that transcends "Barbarian" or "cleric"
The PCs are going to be a little bit more powerful inherently This is a "Destiny" Campaign... no matter what you do Greatness and Drama are going to stalk you... how you react to it and what you do with and to this City will be up to you.
One character might start exhibiting draconic traits while another might start sparking off moments of divine power. Or perhaps PC 4 is absurdly lucky. I'll be making custmoized templates for your characters once you decide on a Theme and a Class.
I Do believe I'm going to throw a lot at the party so Levels will more or less happen when I say they happen... I will want you to experience all the content of this campaign without getting to the point that you yawn and walk all over the enemy.
